How GST Calculations Work

Understanding GST inclusive and exclusive calculations, CGST vs SGST vs IGST, and how to verify GST amounts on invoices.
What GST Is
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a value-added tax applied to most goods and services sold in India. It replaced multiple older indirect taxes and is designed as a single unified tax system. GST is charged at different rates depending on the category of goods or services, with common rates of 5, 12, 18, and 28 percent. Some items are exempt or taxed at a nil rate.
GST Exclusive Calculation
When a price is listed as GST exclusive, the tax is added on top. To calculate the total amount payable, multiply the base price by the GST rate to get the tax, then add it to the base price. For example, if a product costs 1,000 rupees and GST is 18 percent, the tax is 180 rupees and the total payable is 1,180 rupees. You can also calculate this in one step by multiplying the base price by 1 plus the GST rate (1.18 in this case).
GST Inclusive Calculation
When a price is listed as GST inclusive, the tax is already included in the displayed price. To find the base price and the GST amount, divide the total by 1 plus the GST rate. For a total of 1,180 rupees with 18 percent GST included: divide 1,180 by 1.18 to get a base price of 1,000 rupees. The GST amount is 1,180 minus 1,000, which is 180 rupees.
CGST, SGST, and IGST
For transactions within a single state, GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). On an 18 percent transaction, 9 percent goes to CGST and 9 percent goes to SGST. For transactions between states, the full GST is collected as Integrated GST (IGST) by the central government, which later distributes the appropriate share to the destination state. This distinction matters for businesses filing GST returns but does not change the total tax paid by the consumer.
Verifying GST on Invoices
When you receive a GST invoice, you can verify the calculation. Check whether the price is quoted as inclusive or exclusive of GST. If inclusive, divide the total by (1 plus rate) to confirm the base price. If exclusive, multiply the base by the rate to confirm the tax. Ensure the GSTIN (GST Identification Number) of the supplier is valid and that the CGST and SGST split is correct for intra-state transactions. For inter-state transactions, only IGST should appear.
