BMI Calculator

Calculate your Body Mass Index

What Is This Calculator?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening tool that helps assess whether a person has a healthy body weight relative to their height. Developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s, BMI has become the international standard for classifying weight status in adults. BMI provides a simple numeric measure that allows health professionals to quickly identify potential weight-related health risks. The calculation takes into account that taller individuals naturally weigh more than shorter individuals, providing a more balanced assessment than weight alone. While BMI is incredibly useful for population-level studies and initial health screenings, it's important to understand its limitations. BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass, which means a highly muscular athlete might be classified as overweight or obese despite having very low body fat. Similarly, an elderly person might fall within the normal BMI range while having high body fat percentage and low muscle mass. BMI categories are standardized across adults regardless of age or gender: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5-24.9), Overweight (25-29.9), and Obese (30 and above). For children and teens, BMI is interpreted using age and sex-specific percentiles.

Formula Used

BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)2

Weight:Body weight measured in kilograms (kg)
Height:Height measured in meters (m), squared
